Development of an IFOAM Position on Seed
June 30, 2009
In June 2008, the IFOAM General Assembly adopted a motion instructing the IFOAM World Board to develop a position paper on the use of organic seed and propagation materials in organic agriculture.
The IFOAM head office has been working on the topic since then and has produced two documents: The first is a background paper that provides an overview of the many technical, socio-economic and political issues surrounding seeds and breeding. The second is a first draft position on the use of organic seed and propagation materials in organic agriculture (or Draft Seed Position). Feedback received in writing and at the IFOAM Conference on Plant and Animal Breeding identified a need for substantial revision of the draft, which is going to take place in the coming weeks. The new text will then be circulated again for consultation.

The Seed Position Blog remains open as a space for informal discussion and exchange of ideas.
